Afforestation and Desertification-Control in Xiaobazi Township, Fengning County

Location: Xiaobazi Township, Fengning County, Hebei Province

Duration: 2004.03--2005.03

Donors: Ke`idanren Nature Conservation Fund, Tianjin Figaro Electronic Co., Ltd., Tianjin Sunshine Plastics Co., Ltd.

Since 2001, with the support of Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund, Tianjin Sunshine Plastics Co., Ltd. and Tianjin Figaro Electronic Co., Ltd., CANGO carried out the afforestation project in Xiaobazi County for 4 years.

Fengning is an autonomous county of Man National mintority in Hebei Province. It's 188 kms away from Beijing and is the source of five rivers in the areas of Beijing and Tianjin, including the Chao and the Luan river. In the middle of the 1990s, with the increase of sandstorms in the Beijing area, Fengning became the focus of people's attention for its desertification. In 2004, 2,500 trees on 23 mu were planted. Over 40 000 trees have been planted in total on 325 mu of land (6mu equals 1 acre) with an over 80% survival rate which is the highest in the history of afforestation in Xiaobazi.

Since the afforestation project was implemented, a number of trainings were conducted, through which the awareness of the local villagers to care more about the ecological environment was greatly strengthened. The implementation of this project had a positive impact on the improvement of the environment and enhanced the quality of the local people's life.

The 26 Degree Campaign was a collaborative initiative launched by six Chinese environmental NGOs: China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO), Global Village of Beijing (GVB), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) China, Friends of Nature (FON), Institute for Environmental and Development (IED) and Green Earth Volunteers (GEV). The goal was to convince the public and big electricity consumers, like hotels and shopping malls, to set air conditioners at or above 26 degree in order to alleviate the electricity shortage in Beijing city and to protect the environment by improving energy efficiency.

From June 26th to Sept 26th, there were 10 activities organized through different approaches to obtain the overall goal of the campaign. The activities targeted the media, hotels and shopping malls, and the public in different communities. Throughout the whole process of the campaign there was an efficient core team, composed of members from each organization, organizing activities and managing the campaign.

Being the first cooperation between Chinese local NGOs, the campaign obtained its goal. However, when the campaign was reviewed after its completion, we realized that there were some shortcomings. But, more importantly, all of the organizations involved learned from the experience, which will ensure that in the future any similar project will be even more successful. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the German Heinrich Boell Foundation (HBF) for sponsoring this campaign.
