In 2002, CANGO submitted the project proposal of building a bridge at Youhekou village in Daquandian township by the Japanese Embassy. In the spring of 2003, when Mr. Chiba Akira, counselor of the Japanese Embassy went to Shangcheng on a business trip, we took this opportunity to invite him for a visit to the site of the proposed project. Beautiul natural conditions and simple local customs evoked pleasant memories of his far away home. He saw that the local farmers are unable to participate in the market economy and improve their living conditions due to difficult communication and transport problems. In addition, he learned that children have to wade across a river in order to go to school and that children often drown in the river. In the afternoon of July 29th, 2003 the Japanese Embassy in China and CANGO held the signing ceremony of the project for building the bridge at Youhekou village in Daquandian township for the benefit of the local people. Construction of the bridge was completed at the end May 2004.
The bridge connects the neighboring 4 villages and prevents the calamity of children drowning while wading across the river. Also, the bridge makes life more convenient for nearby farmers in terms of production, thus it can help improve their living standards.

To supply adequate drinking water for 6 villages in Yishikuke Township of Shache county, Xinjiang province, Islamic Relief provided financial support to build 10 water wells with a depth of 60 meters. The project period was from May to June in 2004 and aimed to provide safe and clear water for 300 families, 5 schools, with a total number of 2400 rural farmers and pupils.
Xinjiang Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (DOFTEC) was authorized to monitor the implementation of the project on behalf of CANGO. A contract was signed with Kashi Land Industry Company to ensure that the drilled wells met local needs and provided clean water with enough quantity, otherwise the wells would have to be re-drilled.

This project in Wanttong Township, Jingxian County, Anhui Province targeted 400 households in extremely poor living conditions of 8 villages; women accounted for 76.3% of the beneficiaries. 400 sheep sheds (4860 m2), 40 medicinal bath tubes, 400 ferment tanks and 8 treatment rooms with medical treatment equipment were constructed.
Each target village has one epidemic preventing veterinary. 10 courses of technical training were hosted. 1085 person/times participated, 76.3% participants were women. The training focused on forage and feedstuff preparing, feeding methods, propagating knowledge, vaccinations, diseases prevention, and artificial insemination. Moreover, 50 under elementary school level participants joined a course of functional literacy training.
With the assistance of Caritas Australia, 300 households from 10 administrative villages of Shahe Township in Jinzhai County, Anhui Province participated in a project on the cultivation of lucid ganoderma; this product has a variety of uses, particularly in Chinese medicine. 1225 farmers benefited. In 2004, a new variety of lucid ganoderma No.3 was introduced through the project. Due to its good quality, the price was 2 times higher than the local variety of lucid ganoderma.
With the introduction of a new technology for collecting pollen by using glazed paper the quality of pollen from the spore was greatly improved. As a result, the production was increased by one third. Each household earned a net income of 1057 yuan on average, and a net income of 259 yuan per person. To expand the market channel, a 100-ton purchased contract was signed with the Zhejiang Shilejian Pharmacy Limited Company. Thus the farmers' risks were reduced and their interests were protected.
Supported by Misereor of Germany, CANGO executed this project with successful cooperation with the Vocational Training School of Jinghong City, Yunnan Province. Over a nearly two and a half year period of using participatory methodology in various project sites, we trained more than one thousand village technicians in all seven sessions and more than 80 village authorities in 3 sessions. Half of the participants were women.
Two agricultural production exhibitions were conducted successfully with cooperation from all sides of the project. The livelihood conditions of local farmers have been improved through the project. The indigenous knowledge and biodiversity conservation are well balanced with modern science. The local minorities appreciated and benefited from the project.
